There are very many things to do in the north shore and upcountry areas of Maui. You will find out that it does not take very
long to explore all of Maui from our home, since we are so centrally located. Our beautiful and un-crowded north shore beaches are very close by, with Hookipa
Beach, world famous windsurfing, kite surfing and surfing beach, being just 5 minutes away and the rest of the beaches unfolding from there. The north shore beaches are perfect for all water sports, be it for practicing as well as spectacular watching, for sea turtles, wonderful long
beach walks or just to hang out at and mingle with the locals, versus being submerged in tourists.
One wonderful nightly ocean spectacle happens precisely at Hookipa. Dozens of turtles walk right up onto the beach to get their evening rest at sun set. Ideal snorkel spots are either on the way to the west side or on the south side, a 45 to 60 minute picturesque drive away.

There are fun hikes to water falls just around the corner and the road to Hana is half way complete from here and if you leave earlier in the morning, you will be looking at the surrounding beauty instead of all the other rental cars ahead of you.
Hale Mauka Makai is located at the foot of Haleakala, our dormant crater, another must visit and Upcountry offers many hikes, botanical gardens, the Alii Lavender Farm and much more.
Many internationally known yoga teachers work in the Haiku/Paia/Makawao area and
Maui’s high performance health center, “Upcountry Fitness”, is a 10 minute walk or 1 minute drive up the road, as well as some necessary facility stores and several good and fun restaurants, offering a broad variety of foods and live Hawaiian music on some evenings.
Paia and Makawao are quaint little towns and the true gems of Maui. They are 10 minutes away from our home and filled with beautiful little shops, boutiques, art galleries and affordable and great little restaurants. Again, different from the much more tourist oriented shops and restaurants you will find in Lahaina or Kihei.
Some of the world’s most beautiful golf courses are located right here on Maui. If you wish you can play a different course every day and at the same time explore the island. A 20-60 minute drive will take you there. 
Luaus are on the west or south side, so again about an hour drive away, but you can combine that with a visit to that side of the island.
The south and west sides are definitely must visits, but at the end of the day, you will be happy to be “coming home” to Hale Mauka Makai and the more serene Haiku.
